It’s been a while since I read Richards’ last book, “The Enigma Cube”, to which this book is a sequel. Consequently I found the opening highly confusing, in which the reader is plunged straight into extended circumstances of the previous book.But this initial confusion is cleared up shortly, and the FIRST HALF of this novel lives up to the MAGNIFICENT Richards’ stories we’re used to. In typical fashion, Richards holds his readers spellbound with science in accord with our latest understanding and our wonderings. There are gripping adventures at different times and places in spacetime, from ancient Rome to the present, made accessible by the enigma cube.HOWEVER, there is one major theme in the SECOND HALF of this book that is TOTALLY at odds with Christianity. While this book IS fiction, after all, I just wish Richards would have matched his religious fiction as closely to facts and mainstream hypotheses as he does in his writing about science and technology. He does not, and he must spend an inordinate amount of time in the second half of the book trying, through his characters’ actions, to explain his anti-Christian theme.I’ve read every one of Richards’ previous books and found them ALL to be stupendous. Were it not for his perverse writing about religion in this book, it would have also been stupendous. BTW, I am not a fundamentalist Christian.Martin Fricke, Ph.D. (nuclear physics) Once again I'm in awe of this author! Not only does he capture my interest... as in "can't put it down"... but how he brings imagination and reality together in stunning ways! I've said before that one of the reasons I'm so impressed is how, at the end of the book, he tells me what's real, what's imaginary, where he got his information and gives examples and excerpts from the books and papers he used as part of his research to pull together a great story! And just for fun, I was waiting for him to justify the title by using it, which he did, in a way that brought it to life and gave it the meaning it deserved.
